  • Notes
    • The Gaylors worked mostly as farmers. Cotton farming was prominent during the time so they probably continued to farm cotton for income even after they were freed in 1865. James Jr had a home farm and probably produced some food for his family.

Like many early black families the Gaylors couldn't read or write but they began sending their children to schools in the 1900's.

We don't really know Rosena's husband's name. However, much like we see their children later having a 'Rosena' in each household, we see the same trend with the name, Nathaniel. Nathaniel is probably her husband's name.

The Gaylors report that they are from Maryland. The 1870 census doesn't reflect many black Gaylor families in that region at the time.

One Family oral tradition states that after Rosena's husband died. She worked as a personal cook for her former owners. The owner fell in love with her and left her a large portion of land. Of which, her children later divided up amongst the family. Some of that land is still Gaylor property today.

The 1880 Census shows that Louisa and Henrietta are Rosa Gaylor's daughters. Check the fact that Rosa and Addy are listed as nieces and see where Henrietta says her mother is from. The peculiar thing here is that Addy and Rosa say their Dad, which should be Nathaniel, was born in VA. It's possible Martha traveled there and gave birth to Nathaniel. - RVF,Sr. - 09-07-2007
