- Currently speculation and more research needs to be done, but I, Reginald Vaughn Finley, Sr, suspect that Charles Billings is the grandfather of Hezekiah Billings, who later named his son also Charles F. Billings, who then named his son Hezekiah Billings..
This Charles Billings was killed by hanging. He was suspected on conspiring to start a revolt.
Much like the Salem Witch trails, this charge is becoming more and more dismissed by historians as some from of hysteria, as slave revolts were a slave owners worst fear.
More research needs to be to confirm. I am currently seeking out the wife of Charles Billings. She would have fled to Mississii with children in tow.
As copied from the notes I placed in Hezekiah's Notes:
I'm not certain, but I think I may have found Hezekiah's grandfather. He may have been a slave that was a executed for trying/conspiring to revolt. I don't know for sure, but I am keeping my eyes on a Charles Billings from South Cy info on a wife as of yet.
I found this list which mentions a Charles Billings that was hung for an attempted revolt: (http://users.bestweb.net/~rg/execution/C.htm) and then I later found the as tried: http://www.ipoaa.com/denmark_vesey__and_his_co3.htm (Control F for charles Billings). Every single person listed with him were found to be executed on the previous link. On either on JUL 2nd 1822 or JUL 26 1822. So very sad. :(
I wish I could find some information on his wife and on his owners. The search continues.
I'll make copies of the information I have an archive it here.
The document that lists these executions wre pulled from The National Park Service Records:
Charles is also listed here: http://users.bestweb.net/~rg/execution/SO%20CAROLINA.htm
